Stargazer, a manufacturer of American-made cast iron cookware based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, was founded in 2015. Their highly-acclaimed skillets are renowned for their smooth surface finish and modern, practical design, designed for performance.
The founder of Stargazer Cast Iron, Peter Huntley, a housewares designer, set out to build a product and a company that could be held to a higher standard, after becoming disenchanted by the lack of quality and accountability present in modern goods manufactured overseas. Convinced people should have access to high quality, well designed cast iron at a reasonable price, Huntley designed the first Stargazer skillet in the summer of 2015, after six months, 21 designs, and several prototypes.
Stargazer's skillets begin their journey at the company's foundry, where domestically sourced, primarily recycled iron is melted at 2,800°F. The molten iron is refined, checked for purity, and then poured into molds made of sand and clay in a "green sand" casting process. Once cooled, the molds are released, leaving behind a solid, raw casting. The raw castings are then sent to the machine shop, where they are individually loaded into a custom-built fixture and CNC machined across the entire interior surface, allowing the company to dial in the optimal weight and thickness of each skillet with precision. This process is also the first step towards creating a cooking surface that is naturally non-stick and easy to clean.
The skillets then arrive in Allentown, PA, where they pass a thorough inspection and move on to the finishing process. Stargazer's craftsmen use a series of hand tools to grind and smooth any burrs or other artifacts remaining from casting and machining. After being meticulously shaped by hand, each skillet undergoes a proprietary two-step surface finish treatment that yields the smooth, micro-textured cooking surface that has made Stargazer famous, designed to easily release food but hold onto seasoning.
After a final inspection, a Stargazer employee packs each skillet in a box that is made just a couple miles down the road from the factory, and the orders ship from the company's headquarters in Allentown, PA.
Stargazer cookware is built to last many lifetimes, and the company offers a lifetime warranty, covering manufacturer defects. The skillets are 100% non-toxic, made of grey iron, and the seasoning blend used is non-GMO, vegetarian/vegan friendly, and free from soy, peanut, and gluten.
Stargazer's cast iron skillets are versatile, offering excellent heat retention, making them great for searing, frying, baking, and more. The company also provides recommendations for delicious recipes that can be prepared in their cast iron cookware, such as cheeseburger egg rolls, Thai stir-fry, and skillet caramel apple pie.
